Description:
Abstract:
With the spread of geographic information science and its easy management through easy-to-understand technologies for the general public, the concepts of participatory/voluntary process of geographic data acquisition and dissemination (VGI) were introduced. The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the concept of participatory geographic information and to present its different aspects. The chapter focuses both on examples and applications of direct and conscious participatory process e.g. Openstreetmap or on implicit participatory geographic information such as the use of social media with the possibility to report location (geographic coordinates) or its content referring to spatial concepts (e.g. travelblogs). Particular emphasis is placed on semantic and interoperability issues that occur both when making data available to the general public and when interfacing it with official agency data.
