Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the mechanism that gives rise to phrase structure. It starts with the description of phrase structure rules, moves on to a generalised schema and concludes with the introduction of the binary operation Merge. The chapter is organised in 7 sections. Section one is introductiory and shows the descriptive adequacy of phrase structure rules. Section two discusses the problems these rules have, and suggests a generalised schema with the introduction of the variable X. The third and fourth sections analyse the sentence as the projection of the inflectional head, while section five extends this schema to the projection of the complementiser and the analysis of the noun phrase as the projection of the article (or the determiner). Section six analyses this schema through the binary operation Merge. Section seven summarises the discussion and is followed by suggestions for further reading, the bibliography and indicative excercises. This chapter is an introduction to phrase structure but also a presentation of how theoretical argumentation proceeds, based on the empirical data and the theoretical analysis.
