Abstract:
A description of macroscopic and physical characteristics, properties and uses of wood produced from forest species of temperate zone and of Mediterranean shrubs and trees is given, separately for each species. The description refers to a number of 13 genera of softwoods and 33 genera of hardwoods with commercial value, where the Greek wood productive forest species are included. Also, it refers to 29 genera of evergreen and deciduous hardwood shrubs and trees grown in Mediterranean region. For all above forest species of shrubs and trees, colored photos of longitudinal sections (radial, tangential) are included showing the variation of wood figure. In the case of walnut, photos of final products (gun stocks, furniture, musical instruments) and of various production techniques of decorative wood veneers are presented. At last, a number of tables presents the physical, mechanical and main uses of wood, separately for each wood species.
