Subject: NATURAL SCIENCES AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES > AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES > FOREST SCIENCE AND FOREST PRODUCTS > FORESTRY
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter refers to the meaning of wood quality and what it expresses for wood, how it is defined, what factors depends on and how it is influenced during the growth period of forest species as well as from treatments and processing of wood after felling of forest trees and transportation of timber to forest industries in order to produce semi-final and final products. Afterwards, the relations of wood quality with the various anatomic characteristics of softwoods and hardwoods as well as the relations of wood structure and its chemical composition with wood properties and uses are presented. Moreover, certain principal wood properties (density, hygroscopicity, dimensional changes, deterioration from biological and abiotic factors, natural durability, impregnability, mechanical properties, rate of drying and ability to bending) and their impacts on wood utilization are analyzed.
