Abstract: |
The historical overview begins in the 1920s, when Lotka published a study on the distribution of scientific productivity frequency, and continues up to the publication of Derek de Solla Price’s books Science Since Babylon and Little Science – Big Science (1961–1963), which analyzed the scientific communication system of the time and introduced the first systematic approach to the structure of science. Subsequently, in the early 1980s, Bibliometrics evolved into a distinct field with a defined profile, subfields, and structures of scientific communication. The institutionalization of the field began in 1978 with the launch of the journal Scientometrics, followed by the field’s international conferences starting in 1983, and the journal Research Evaluation, which began in 1991. During the 1990s, Bibliometrics became a research management tool, incorporating advanced techniques, which will be discussed alongside the key concepts and definitions of various metrics: bibliometrics, scientometrics, informetrics, and historiometrics.
