Abstract: |
In this chapter the question of whether religious fundamentalism, on the basis of its specific characteristics, constitutes a political ideology is investigated. Protestant and Islamic fundamentalism are then presented. Then, at a more abstract level, the major ideological characteristics of religious fundamentalism - opposition to the marginalisation of religious belief, selectivity, Manichaeism, infallibility, messianism and chiliasm - are systematically approached, and linked to its organisational features.
