Description:
Abstract:
The chapter clarifies the concept of fascism as a general category of a historically defined political phenomenon in relation to its narrow definition, namely Italian interwar fascism. It is argued that, despite the objections raised, fascism can be seen as a complete ideology. Its ambiguous nature is highlighted, in that it can be described as both reactionary in terms of Enlightenment values and principles and revolutionary in terms of its aim to reform people and society in an innovative way. The main ideas of Italian fascism, with emphasis on the fundamental importance of the state, are analysed, followed by those of German national socialism, with emphasis on the racial view of the people and the nation. Through their presentation, the relations of similarity and overlap as well as differentiation between them are highlighted. Reference is made to neo-fascism and post-fascism.
