Abstract:
In this chapter reference is made to the origins of socialism and its diversity. The main versions of utopian socialism are described. Marxism is discussed as major for the socialist tradition as a whole and the main positions of Marx and Engels are analysed. Marxism-Leninism is examined as the most important heir and successor to orthodox Marxism. Revisionism is studied as a decisive break in the revolutionary Marxist tradition, followed by social democracy, which is its own development. Finally, Eurocommunism and market socialism are briefly presented.
