Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, first of all, the origins and general spirit of liberalism are identified, and its fundamental ethical positions are analysed, focusing on individualism, freedom and tolerance. Next, its economic view of free markets and the institution of private property are presented. Then, and after the general picture of liberal ideology has been established, two particular and significantly different versions of liberal ideology, social liberalism and neoliberalism, are examined. Finally, the complex and fluctuating relationship between liberalism and democracy is discussed at length.
