Description:
Abstract:
The aim of the exercise is to familiarize students theoretically and experimentally with the concept of the cell life cycle and the influence of certain critical physical and chemical factors on it. For this purpose, non-pathogenic micro-organisms with a short cell cycle will be used in the experimental part, that can be reproduced with relative ease allowing to study quantitatively: a) the effect of temperature, b) the deficiency or lack of certain essential growth factors, and c) the effect of inhibitory factors (e.g. antibiotics). This exercise allows students to get in touch with classical and modern research methods in microbial biology (such as the nephelometric method) which are widely used in many applications, both in everyday life (e.g. microbial load testing of water or food) and in basic research.
