Abstract:
The purpose of the exercise is to familiarize the students with one of the most important biological phenomena of life on earth, the biochemical process of photosynthesis. The exercise combines the knowledge gained in Exercise 3 (on the anatomy of leaves and the organelles of plant cells), with the biochemistry of photosynthesis. The first part of the exercise describes the methodology in which spinach leaves and the floating disc technique are used to determine the production of oxygen, which takes place during the light reactions of photosynthesis and hydrolysis (photolysis) of water. In the second part of the exercise, trainees use the method of chromatography to separate the chemical compounds that constitute the background of photosynthesis (chlorophylls a and b, xanthophylls, carotenoids), while in the third part, they study qualitatively the relationship between photosynthesis and starch production.
