Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the definition and properties of the elements and processes of symmetry are presented. The distinction between the concept of symmetry element and symmetry operation is clarified. The definition and characteristic examples of rotation axes, reflection planes, center of symmetry, and axes of rotation-reflection and the effect of the corresponding operations on a molecule are given. The concept of combining operations and the inverse operation is introduced. Generative and derivative symmetry operations are distinguished, and the symmetry of a molecule is described based on the set of symmetry elements and operations.
