Abstract: |
Modern Chemistry deals with the study of a vast number of compounds that adopt many different geometric structures. Each molecule differs from others not only in terms of the number and types of its atoms but also in terms of the symmetry of its nuclear skeleton. This symmetry, called molecular symmetry, determines many of the chemical properties of chemical compounds. This chapter presents the concept of molecular symmetry and highlights the inadequacy of a general description of it and the need for a systematic description. Some of the physicochemical properties of molecules that can be studied based on their symmetry are discussed. Finally, the development period of group theory and its applications in molecular symmetry are presented, along with the scientists who contributed to it.
