Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we examine the "creation" of social, political, economic history, the history of ideas, mentalities, sciences, culture, and other specialized histories. The term "creation" is deliberately placed in quotes: all these histories have almost always had their place within the unified history. Therefore, we cannot pinpoint the moment of their creation or autonomy. It is more appropriate to examine the conditions under which each of these smaller histories found itself at the center of broader scientific discussion. This is our goal in this chapter. However, it should be emphasized that definitions are avoided, as they are not only difficult to understand and tedious but also inapplicable to history and other social and human sciences. The main questions addressed here are as follows: Are the boundaries between the various histories distinct? How, for example, is the research field of social history separated from that of political or economic history, and what are the prospects or possibilities for the development of each? How is the unique map of historical science shaped, and what is the ultimate use of drawing more and more imaginary borders and forming more and more imaginary territories among several neighbors and claimants of the same domains?
