Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the scientification of historical writing from the early 19th century and the gradual recognition of history as a legitimate scientific discipline. It begins by exploring the relationship between the revolutions of the 18th century and the historical perceptions of contemporary societies. It then addresses a question that a young historian might pose today: why should they know the past of their science, and why are they obliged to learn the scientific principles of a renowned old historian (like Ranke), which are now considered outdated and obsolete? What are the historical schools they also need to study? Who was Marx, and what is Marxist theory? Designed to answer these questions, this chapter ultimately aims to encourage history students to understand that (and why) they need the knowledge of the history of their science, perhaps more so than other scientists.
