Description:
Abstract:
The electrical phenomena in the atmosphere, along with its electrical properties, play important roles in meteorological and other atmospheric physical processes. The subject of Atmospheric Electricity deals with electromagnetic phenomena, mostly of electrostatic nature, which take place in the lower atmosphere. An example is lightning, one of the most spectacular transient phenomena of nature. The electrical phenomena in the lower atmosphere are due to the presence of electrical charges, electric fields and currents, the strength of which differs dramatically during times of fair and disturbed (bad) weather conditions. These electrical phenomena are poorly understood and remain for long time the subject of active research. The present chapter provides a basic overview on atmospheric electricity.
