This chapter describes and analyzes shared memory systems and multicore processors from the perspective of their organization and architecture. It examines:
(a) how these components are interconnected to form a unified system,
(b) the overall system organization and memory hierarchy,
(c) the issues caused by caches and the protocols used to maintain system coherence,
(d) the consistency model of shared memory,
(e) examples from commercial systems.
