Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the process of producing synthetic motion (animation) in virtual worlds, focusing on both the required technologies and design issues. First, the different options are presented in terms of modelling the objects, depending on the type of motion we want them to perform. Then, an overview of algorithms and techniques for reproducing predefined motions as well as for dynamic motion generation through simulation is given. The process of defining and generating motion with keyframing, using motion capture data, modeling physical laws, and issues of conflict detection and reaction to conflicts are presented. Finally, techniques for complex movement and behavior of synthetic characters are discussed, starting from the presentation of decision architectures such as state machines and intelligent agents, and continuing to techniques such as path finding, dynamic object avoidance and coordinated crowd movement.
