Description:
Abstract:
The subject of this chapter is the process of visualization of the virtual world, both from the technological and the design point of view. An introductory overview is given of the algorithms and techniques from the field of graphics that are utilized for modeling and visualizing the environment. Appropriate geometry representation models for different content categories, geometric transformations, textures and materials, various lighting and light-shading techniques, camera placement and perspective projection, and other specialized modelling and visualization issues are presented. Next, the scene graph and its use in 3D worlds is introduced, basic techniques and tools for 3D content modelling are described, and geometry optimisation issues are addressed. Finally, an overview of relevant supporting software for building 3D scenes and their real-time visualization is given.
