Description:
Abstract:
The mission of the myeloid and monocytoid leucocytes is to protect the organism from noxious agents such as bacteria and toxic substances. This process is carried out in a direct way, i.e., through chemotactically induced migration of the white blood cells towards their tqrgets, phagocytosis and intracellular death of the invading pathogens. Intracellular killing is effected by various oxidative mechanisms or perforation by the activated complement. Final step is is the intracellular degradation of the deleterious agents (lysosomes contain the necessary enzymes) and exocytosis of the debris. In some instances (hereditary, as a rule) leucocytes display various morphological changes, occasionally in association with a number of functional abnormalities. Other, more common disturbances include neutropenia, neutrophilic leukocytosis, eosinophilia, onocytosis etc. All of them need a thorough evaluation and diagnosis, since their consequences vary from mild to serious conditions or hide other underlying non-hematological illnesses.
