Abstract:
The last chapter describes the evolution of the international monetary system from a historical perspective. Initially, the Gold Standard and the Bretton-Woods systems of fixed exchange rates are presented, followed by modern system of flexible exchange rates. Then, it presents the theory of Optimal Currency Area (which is the theoretical background for the single currency), the Werner project and the ‘Snake’ agreement, the European Monetary System and the course towards the Economic and Monetary Union.
