Abstract:
In this chapter, the concepts of Data Mining (ED) and Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KD) are presented as well as the differences between them so that the student will be able to identify which tasks are examples of Data Mining and which are not. The fields of science on which ED is based are also mentioned and the necessity of developing this new field of science is understood. The main objectives of the chapter are for the student to be able to evaluate the actions required to solve a problem using ED, to learn to distinguish the different tasks of ED into predictive and descriptive, to understand the type of problems that can be solved using ED, to know the range of activities that can be performed using ED and finally to be able to evaluate the validity or otherwise of the results obtained.
