Abstract: |
This book has two complementary objectives. It deals with: a) fundamental areas and concepts of the syntactic domain of language, as studied by contemporary syntactic theory, and b) how these areas are realized in non-standard language, i.e., in language disorders (speech disorders) that affect morphology and syntax, as well as how they evolve in the course of language acquisition. The textbook also refers to findings of syntactic theory that have been used in the treatment of language disorders, a reference that is rare in both Greek and international educational literature. The reason for writing this teaching aid is that in recent years an extremely large number of studies have been produced, both in Greek and cross-linguistically, on the behavior of non-standard language with regard to a series of morphosyntactic phenomena and characteristics. However, these studies are not compiled in a Greek-language book – nor in any foreign-language book – for teaching purposes. Furthermore, the above findings are by no means organized according to syntactic feature and/or language disorder. In order to understand the scientific contribution and usefulness of the studies referred to above, knowledge of modern syntactic theory is required. However, the few, and not particularly recent, textbooks on syntactic theory deal with the relevant concepts in detail that is not always easy to understand for students interested in language disorders or early language acquisition. On the other hand, the few textbooks on language acquisition and language disorders do not usually analyze the theoretical background of the syntactic domain, perhaps because they try to cover all areas of language and not just syntax. This textbook fills these gaps.
