Abstract: |
Chapter 7 "Digital Terrain Model" presents the capability to create models of continuous phenomena (e.g. terrain, temperature, rainfall, population distribution) from a limited number of measurements, which is a significant contribution of technology to Geoinformatics and, by extension, to map composition. This chapter analyzes the creation of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) by utilizing the thematic layers of information associated with it, such as contour lines, points of known elevation, hydrological networks, coastlines, etc. The creation of the DTM is described using both the Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) method and algorithms based on the grid structure. It is emphasized that the presented process is applicable to almost all phenomena that exhibit continuous distribution. Emphasis is placed on creating the Digital Terrain Model due to the large number of applications related both to the model itself and its derivative quantities. Issues analyzed include: the utilization of each thematic layer during the creation of the DTM, the reliability check of the DTM through specific techniques (identification of flat triangles, comparison between initial and derived contours, detection of gross errors in the initial data, determination of the root mean square error, range of elevation values, etc.), the comparison of the two DTM recording structures, and the visualization of the DTM through shading, contour lines, and elevation zones.
