Description:
Abstract:
This chapter provides a general introduction to the basic concepts of simulation models. First, the definitions of system and simulation are given and then the characteristics of the systems involved in modeling are developed. Since the concept of a model is important for the study of any system, a definition of a model is given and the different types of models are discussed, leading to different classifications. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of creating simulation models for investigating and solving decision making problems are presented. Finally, through several examples, fundamental concepts of discrete-event simulation such as: entities, activities and processes, events, states, determinants and stochastic elements are described and the time flow mechanism as used in simulation is developed.
