High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission

Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission systems and their main applications. Two categories of converters used in HVDC systems are analyzed: a) The Current Source Converter (CSC), controlled by thyristors, leading to CSC–HVDC technology, and b) The Voltage Source Converter (VSC), mainly controlled by insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), resulting in VSC–HVDC technology. Both CSC–HVDC and VSC–HVDC systems are hybrid Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) systems. Equivalent circuits suitable for DC and AC power flow studies are presented for both CSC–HVDC and VSC–HVDC systems, and power flow equations are derived.
