Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents in detail the longitudinal mechanical waves propagating in gases and introduces the concept of sound waves. The example of sound wave superposition in the open and semi-open pipe cases and the corresponding resonance conditions are given. The resonance conditions and the normal modes of oscillation of bounded circular membranes are also presented. Then the concept of sound wave intensity and the concept of sound intensity deciBels (dB) are defined. The sources, wavefronts and propagation of plane, cylindrical and spherical waves are presented, and their intensity is calculated as a function of their distance away from the source.
