Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the fundamental operating principles of amplifiers used to amplify biosignals, which may be either inherently electrical or previously converted into electrical signals. The discussion focuses on the preamplification stages, specifically those used immediately after signal acquisition via electrodes or transducers. The basic equations governing the operation of the differential amplifier are provided, along with an analysis of the ideal operational amplifier (OpAmp). The implementation of differential amplifier circuits using ideal OpAmps is examined, aiming to present the basic preamplification unit for biomedical signals, known as the instrumentation amplifier. Special emphasis is placed on explaining the impact of unwanted electrode contact potentials and the consequent necessity of designing circuits with a high common mode rejection ratio (CMRR).
