Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the basic concepts and principles underlying the measurement and prediction of performance are examined. The objectives and design of a performance study are analyzed. The workload of a system is defined and techniques for selecting and characterizing the workload for system performance analysis are described. Measurement and data collection techniques such as event tracing, sampling, monitors and supervision techniques, program optimisers, accounting logs and benchmarks are considered. Different categories of benchmark programs are described, with emphasis on standardized programs developed and controlled by international organizations (SPEC, TPC). Capacity management/planning and load forecasting techniques with emphasis on the design of Web services are addressed. Techniques for presenting and interpreting measurement results are described.
