Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 1 presents the basic concepts related to the quantitative analysis of Performance and Quality of Service in computer systems. The concept of system is introduced and the objectives, benefits and difficulties of a performance engineering study are examined. General analysis methodologies, namely analytical models, simulation and measurement techniques, are described and their main characteristics are discussed. The concepts of workload and performance indices, which constitute the input and output, respectively, in each performance model, are also introduced. Different types of performance indices (time, space and speed measures) are considered and their characteristics are examined. Special reference is made to the performance characteristics of Web-based systems.
