Description:
Abstract:
This book examines ethno-cultural diversity in the school context by analyzing issues related to its effective management and highlighting the need for the creation of an inclusive school. The book is structured into eleven chapters, each of which presents the particular educational implications of multiculturalism. This important aspect of diversity creates new challenges in the school context making it necessary to outline the profile of students from different cultural backgrounds, as well as to recognize the relationship between cultural diversity and the incidents of bullying or racist behavior in the school. In today’s pluralistic societies, interculturalism emerges as the most effective model for managing diversity, promoting the peaceful coexistence among members of the society, and cultivating human and social values. As the implications of the model are also reflected in the educational environment, the important role of intercultural education in the creation of a school imbued with intercultural orientation is highlighted. In such a school environment, the emphasis is given to the development of intercultural competence, the enhancement and the use of bilingualism in the multicultural classroom, whereas at the same time, the focus is on the design and implementation of intercultural educational practices for effective teaching and learning as well as for the active involvement of all students. The presence of an inclusive school climate that allows all students regardless of their cultural background to interact dynamically, as well as the effective collaboration between the school and the students’ culturally diverse families, is also significant. A school which provides a framework for recognizing and respecting diversity and builds a sense of “belonging” to all students regardless of their diversity features, is the ideal type of school in the contemporary pluralistic society encouraging inclusive education as a global priority.
