Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 2 focuses on the contemporary theoretical debates on small entrepreneurship. Since the late ‘70s, the technological and business environment has been rapidly transforming and acquiring a number of new structural features compatible with small scale. Complementary social sciences examine the evolution of small and medium-sized enterprises in specific localities, focus on the significance of institutions and the local context and place particular emphasis on the conditions that favour the creation and dissemination of knowledge and networking. In this context, Economic Geography has emerged as a privileged field of study of small entrepreneurship. The features of the approach to Economic Geography are elaborated by the study of the two privileged fields of industrialization and regional development that have attracted the interest of academics and policy makers. The first case presents local networks of collaborating SMEs that are active in several stages of production of traditional manufacturing products. Their success is based on their ability to act as interdependent elements of an integrated network that is flexible and adaptable to the frequent changes of the business environment. The dynamics of these networks are examined in the region of the "Third Italy". The second case comments on the regional innovation systems. It is, now, well-established that innovation is an interactive process socially and spatially integrated and cannot be understood outside its specific social and institutional environments.
