Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 1 presents the milestones in the development of the theoretical debate on entrepreneurship in three distinct periods until 1980s. The economist Chantillon introduced the concept of the entrepreneur in the early 17th century. During the long-term early study of entrepreneurship, which extends to the beginning of the 20th century, only a few sporadic attempts to formulate a more conclusive definition of the entrepreneur have been recorded. The second period, which includes the first decades of the 20th century until the beginning of World War II, was particularly fruitful for the development of the debate. Major economists of the period, led by Josef Schumpeter, elaborated on the concepts of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship, formulated alternative definitions for the entrepreneur and introduced the key concepts of uncertainty, risk and innovation. In the third period, comprising of the early postwar decades, the study of entrepreneurship focused on the description of the special characteristics of the entrepreneur.
