Abstract: |
In the chapter titled “Psychobiology, Chromosomes, and Hormones: The Construction of the Western 'Civilized' Binary Sex”, we aim to demonstrate how the social sciences evolved from the theory of evolution, leading to an interpretation of social "ills" through a biological perspective on human nature and improvement. The concept of biology was initially introduced in the early 19th century. Its proponents used the term to refer to a general explanation of life in nature, as proposed by Gottfried Treviranus (1776-1837), as well as to a medical system promoted by Karl Friedrich Burdach (1776-1847), which viewed individuals and society as part of nature's organisms. In particular the chapter delves into the discovery of chromosomes and sex hormones, the influential figure of Magnus Hirschfeld, and the development of psychobiology with a focus on how sex became an integral part of it.
