Formal languages and grammars
Authors: Georgouli, Katerina
Description:
Abstract:
In Chapter 2, formal languages and the grammars that describe them are presented. The chapter begins with a historical overview of programming languages and continues with ways in which a grammar defines a formal language. Each type of grammar also defines the corresponding language using a set of syntactic rules that follow a specific pattern of description. The chapter focuses on describing regular languages through regular definitions which are a template suitable for adoption in the lexical analysis of programming languages.
