| Abstract: |
The chapter presents the technology currently used in lighting systems. Natural lighting has been included in the presentation of the characteristics of light sources. The topics covered are the light sources, the supporting mechanisms for their operation, the design of luminaires and finally the automation that can be used to reduce energy consumption. Due to the EU strategy to improve energy efficiency, several types of lamps have already been or will soon be withdrawn. However, this does not prevent the presentation of their operation because of the great interest in the development of the technology.
