Abstract: |
In the fourth chapter we develop a discussion on the topic of reusing abandoned shipyards. Our intention is the recognition of the value of remaining structures, as well as the evaluation of the architectural interventions, in relation to the memories of the place. We focus on the analysis of six emblematic historic shipyards, which in the past played an important role not only in the prosperity of the city they belong, but also in the world's maritime history. The analyzed projects constitute a sample of revealing cases, because they concern shipbuilding infrastructures spanning a millennium, highlighting the common remaining characteristics of the shipyards, but also the differences and developments determined over time. We present the uniqueness and variety of shipbuilding facilities, as well as the conditions for their conservation and reuse, so as they pass on their values to future generations.
