Abstract: |
This digital textbook provides theoretical and applied knowledge of piano pedagogy issues, to prepare university music students to teach beginner piano students (from their first steps at the piano, up to the first years of piano instruction), regardless of age and teaching environment. Each chapter includes a theoretical background addressing a range of teaching approaches to accommodate the different cognitive and motor abilities according to age. The theoretical background enables young teachers to identify individual learning challenges and promote inclusive lesson plans. The analysis of learning outcomes of lessons designed to address various music and motor skills, as well as the description of instrumental teaching challenges in different ages and teaching environments, aim to ensure the adequate theoretical background of students for their future teaching perspectives. The digital textbook also provides practical application of the theoretical concepts including indicative lesson plans and activities that aim to develop the musical abilities of a new pianist via a holistic approach. In addition, extended bibliographical references on international research and applied methodologies enable the familiarisation of university students with a broad spectrum of methods for beginners, including formal and informal learning approaches and current digital applications. Contemporary developments in the piano pedagogy field suggest that aside from the development of technique and repertoire teaching, piano pedagogy also encompasses fields such as ear training, sight reading, improvisation, group teaching, and so forth. As a result, all these teaching subjects are key elements around which this textbook revolves.
