Abstract:
Experience creation runs through all stages of creating content and user interfaces in multimedia applications. In this chapter we present and simultaneously attempt to enrich basic conceptualizations and design guidelines of "experience", combining its cognitive and affective aspects. In the first part of the chapter, we summarize the different trends in experience design according to the importance and role of the designer/producer, the user, the application and the communication process itself. In the second part we review the main conceptualisations of experience in recent Western thought, with an emphasis on how these are reflected in the experiences that technical communication media produce. Through this trajectory, experience emerges as antecedent and consequential to the knowledge of both human and technical entities. Extending this approach, in the third part of the chapter we discuss issues of evaluation methods for multimedia applications, moving beyond usability and attempting to redefine the formal relationship between user and interactive systems.
