Interactions

Abstract:
In this chapter we approach user-application interaction as a communicative meta-function of the multimedia application. To this end, we first discuss issues of remediation with main references to industrial labour. These elements highlight, among others, the particular importance of the role played by the user during the interaction. Therefore, in the remainder of the chapter we detail the various factors that determine the position(s) of the user as an acting subject. As the above also depends on the intended signification practices, in the next section we present typologically different cases where interaction highlights signification practices or is itself a signification practice. In the last section of the chapter, we specify the above conceptual framework created by the mediation, the positions of the user and the signification practices in a series of questions that can contribute as guidelines to the design of interaction when creating content and user interfaces in multimedia applications. Drawing from the literature, the questions are organized along the axes of a) object manipulation, b) human-computer dialogue, and c) movement in the information space.
