Narratives/Storytelling

Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we discuss the central role of storytelling practices and scenario design in the creation of content and user interfaces in multimedia applications. Storytelling and scenarios are approached as "structures of feeling" that combine patterns of logical associations with the production of affective dynamics. The dramaturgical mix of structure and action that characterizes multimedia narratives is discussed in detail through the terms and conditions for the creation of various script models that range from linear to non-linear information flow. These models are illustrated with flowcharts which are important tools for organizing alternative paths of interaction within the context of a coherent network narrative. Beyond the issues of narrative structures, this chapter emphasizes the generative role of narration in transforming the existing and creating new data through specific narrative modalities that combine ways of presenting content in relation to the position and role of the user. In the last section of the chapter, we present examples of applications in which social science concepts and methods can synthesize all of the above by acting as narrative mechanisms.
