Abstract:
This chapter presents processes and data generation techniques for the development of thematic content in multimedia applications. The basic premise is the following: data do not exist already but are generated by the ways in which we research our topic, by the tools we use and by the semantic dynamics that emerge in the course of the above. In this context, we first present the conditions and specifications through which something can be considered as ”datum”. To be precise, there is never a single datum. A datum acquires informational value only as it is associated with other data. Thus, in the remainder of the chapter we focus on two basic ways of linking data: framing and virtualisation-actualisation. In addition, data are shaped as they are processed. Following this line of reasoning, we first present the basic cognitive operations and then three techniques for semantic processing of data, which involve passages a) from data to concepts, b) from subjects to verbs, and c) from diagrams to maps. A subsection on the importance of noise in highlighting the informational value of data through the redirection of data flow is inserted about halfway through the chapter.
