Abstract: |
The book “Anthropos-Space-Ekistics: Planning Directions of Human Settlements in Greece” elaborates on the relationship between these three elements during the planning process. Emphasis is placed on the degree of influence of the political will in forming planning directions for the residential network of Greece. It is a guidance manual where basic notions such as space, place, city, settlement, and neighbourhood are clarified for the readers to better understand their meanings and their role during the planning process; only in that way could it be possible for them to realize its contribution in forming the space by applying existing methods in various scales with particular interest to be put in local scale. Through the historical review of settlements and cities as a system of concentration of (a) population and (b) activities and transportation network, the historical, geographical, and architectural identity as well as the uniqueness of each place are highlighted. By analysing the theoretical ground as well as the legislative and the methodological framework of design issues for human settlements, in the European and Greek area, limitations and barriers that arise on a case-by-case basis may come to the fore. For Greece, the historical reference presents the evolution and structure of the residential network of Greece with the growth of urban centres, mainly in Athens, revealing challenges of sustainable development.
