Authors: Kirkos, Efstathios
Reviewer: Symeonidis, Panagiotis
Description:
Abstract:
Data warehouses are closely linked to Business Intelligence. This chapter first explains the problems associated with operational data and their unsuitability for decision-making. It then introduces data warehouses and their characteristic features, clarifying the concepts of integration and granularity. Data modeling using the star schema and snowflake schema is presented. The chapter explores the concepts of multidimensional cubes, the base cuboid, and the lattice of cuboids. Concept hierarchies and the possibilities for specialization or generalization are explained. OLAP operations, such as roll-up and drill-down, are described and illustrated. Finally, the chapter addresses data marts and metadata.
