This chapter examines key aspects of Decision Support Systems, which form the foundation of Business Intelligence. It begins with the types of decisions and the process and stages of decision-making. The role of business management in decision-making is explained, along with the use of information technology tools to support this process. A comparison is made between transaction processing systems, management information systems, and DSS. The structural components of a DSS are presented. Finally, the chapter discusses model-driven DSS, data-driven DSS, executive support systems, and group decision support systems.
