Description:
Abstract:
This monograph deals with the Revolution of 1821 in Crete in two levels. At the first level, an attempt is made to reconstruct the events from the beginning of the revolution in 1821 until its cessation in 1830. At this level, the revolution in Crete is related to the evolution of the revolution in mainland Greece. The context of Ottoman Crete at the eve of the revolution is presented, as well as the two distinct episodes of the revolutionary struggle (1821-1824, 1825-1830). At the second level, the specific revolutionary event is taken as a case study to examine specific dimensions of a revolutionary process, such as the dialectical relationship between war and state formation, the conditions and limits of a war economy, and the dynamics that develop in the context of a revolution. At this level, our subject of study is based on theories of political science and historical sociology. The mechanisms of the war economy, logistics and recruiting, the conduct of war on land and sea, the formation of power institutions and the relations between local and central administration are separately presented. A chronology of events, bibliographic guide and documents appendix are also included.
