The major charitable foundations

Description:
Abstract:
It can be argued that private philanthropy is an American invention. In the United States - much more so than in Europe - private philanthropy has a long tradition going back to the time of the pioneers. But the 'new mega-philanthropy' is no longer confined to the United States. A large number of new charities have emerged in Europe and other regions of the world such as East Asia and the Middle East. The main reason is of course the proliferation of the 'super-rich'. The motives of these large donors are complex and range from tax avoidance to social sensitivities on health, the environment and poverty. Yet few foundations - especially the very large ones - have transnational operations. However, the amount of money they give to poorer countries and their influence on development debates is constantly increasing.
