The motives of donor states

Description:
Abstract:
Donors' motivations vary over time. A key distinction is between aid during the Cold War, which reflected mainly geopolitical motives, and aid after the end of the Cold War, whose motives are more complex. Of particular interest is the so-called 'tied aid' which reflects the economic interests of donors. However, one should not underestimate other types of motives such as the international 'image' of the donor state (nation-branding) and motives stemming from public opinion pressure. However, different donor countries do not have the same motivations and vary considerably in their choices.
