Description:
Abstract:
This chapter, along with the next, forms the core of the book. The concepts of partial derivatives, derivatives, and directional derivatives are introduced. Special emphasis is placed on the difference between differentiating a function of several variables and a function of a single variable, highlighting the distinction between the existence of partial derivatives and the existence of the derivative. These concepts are also interpreted geometrically (gradient, tangent plane, level curve) and are then extended to topics such as higher-order partial derivatives, Taylor's theorem for several variables, the study of real functions of several variables (finding local extrema and constrained extrema), and the concepts of implicit functions and inverse vector functions. Special attention is given to curves (vector functions of one variable) and differential operators, leading to an initial discussion of partial differential equations.
