Abstract:
Environmental Governance can be defined as "the sum of the organizations, policy instruments, financial mechanisms, rules, procedures and norms that regulate the processes of global and regional environmental protection". This book explores environmental governance at the international and European level, the mechanisms, policies and tools, as well as the contemporary challenges for environmental governance, as they have been shaped at the international and European level. The book begins with an introductory chapter on international and European environmental governance, the concept, definitions and challenges. Subsequently, the first part consists of 6 chapters with issues related to international environmental governance, mechanisms, tools, important treaties and declarations, as well as topics of exceptional importance, such as the management of the global commons and climate change. The second part focuses on the European environmental governance including chapters related to the objectives, the historical path and the environmental protection rules set at the European level. Overall, this book examines environmental governance as a broad, dynamic and complex concept that seeks to improve the state of the environment while supporting sustainable development.
